Interest Groups

A Word About Interest Groups...

Welcome to Avon Newcomers and to the many interest groups that await your participation.  These groups are the heart and soul of our organization and provide a great way to meet new people, socialize, explore the area; and, most importantly, have fun!

Please refer to our monthly newsletters for scheduled events and all other information for the group activities.

If you have any questions, or you don't see something that sparks your interest, please feel free to contact
Linda Grannen-Tanner at any time to discuss starting a new interest group.  We are always willing to add a new group if there is an activity you would like to pursue that we currently do not offer.
Your Questions Answered....

What is an "interest group?"
These groups are just "mini" newcomers groups that have developed around a certain topic, such as bookgroups, or bunco.

Can I join more than one?
Absolutely!  Join as many as you would like.  In fact, many of our members participate in more than one activity.

What if I miss an interest group meeting?
We understand!  We're human too!  These groups are designed so you can participate at your own pace.

How can I join an interest group?
The easiest way is to attend the September general meeting. Each interest group will have sign up sheets available.  If you can not make that meeting, just contact the designated chairperson.

FOOD, FUN & FRIENDSHIP

Adventures in Dining

Couples meet periodically at different area restaurants to taste their way through the Farmington Valley.

Coffee Talk

This group will meet once a month at a local coffee shop like Panera, Starbucks or Cosi around 9:30 to have coffee, catch up, and hang out. You can bring your kids or come solo. It should be a fun way to get to know some other people in the group.

Couples Cocktails

This group will meet at member's homes several times a year to share cocktails and appetizers/desserts. Consider it a potluck for the new generation. This group will provide a great opportunity to have some fun with our spouses. The host home can determine how large or how small to make that particular gathering.

Community Helping Hands

This group will be Newcomers' liaison to the community. Help keep our members aware of local charities and ways to help our community. You can make this group your own by determining how much to do. You can organize volunteers at Gifts of Love or keep it simpler than that with just a couple of charity drives a year.

Flamingo Fridays

Block/driveway party and tailgating! Friday night get-togethers at someone's house with the kids, weather permitting.

Meals for Members

This group is pretty simple. It's just members helping other members if needed. Its members will be willing to provide a meal to any member having a baby, suffering a serious illness, etc. as needed.  Want to feel good and make others feel good too? Then this is the group for you.

Ladies Night Out

Just like it sounds! When it’s time to get out of the house, join us for a fun night out making new friends or catching up with old ones.

Lunch Bunch

This group is for the ladies who lunch! On a monthly basis, join friends or make new ones as you try out different restaurants in the Farmington Valley.

HOBBIES

Bring your own needlework, sewing or mending projects and enjoy some nice company.  It’s a great way to finish your projects or start new ones.  Members meet weekly in each other’s homes.

Encore

Encore Membership

Encore is the sister group to newcomers.  We are a social group comprised of women who live in Avon and surrounding towns looking to meet and make new friends.  You can be in Encore whether you have been in Avon one week or 5+ years.  Many activities include members from both clubs.  (Separate dues required).
